Found primarily near volcanic activity, also known as olivine, this beautiful gem is also treasured as Pele's tears, the volcano goddess and can be found at the rare green sand beach, Papakolea on the south point of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.
While most gemstones are formed near the surface of the earth, peridot crystals are formed deeper in magma from the upper mantle about 25-55 miles deep and are brought to the surface by tectonic or volcanic activity where they are found in extrusive igneous rocks.
